October's National Lockout Month arrives right as one of the year's busiest move-in stretches wraps up, and Key Kings Locksmith says the two overlap more than people realize
ANDERSON, S.C. - SCaroNews -- October will mark National Lockout Month, an industry-wide push to remind homeowners and renters to check their locks and key situation before problems come up. This year it arrives just as the fall leasing rush across Anderson and Greenville winds down, a stretch that included two of the busiest moving dates of the year, Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, as students and families settled into new homes for the school year. Key Kings Locksmith says that overlap is exactly when it sees the biggest jump in rekey requests and lockout calls.
"Every year we get this same combination in September and October: a wave of people who just moved in and haven't rekeyed yet, right alongside National Lockout Month reminding everybody to actually deal with it," said a company spokesperson for Key Kings Locksmith. "The people who call us in that window are usually the ones who moved in over the summer, meant to change the locks, and just never got around to it."

Key Kings Locksmith says a new lease or closing rarely comes with a guarantee that every copy of the old keys has been returned. Former tenants, landlords, contractors, and previous owners can all still hold a working key unless the locks are rekeyed or replaced. The company recommends new residents treat a fresh rekey as part of move-in, not an optional extra, and use National Lockout Month as the reminder to check locks that were never addressed at move-in time.
